I am flying into LAX. What is the closest rental car company available? I've never rented a car. Any advice?

go to Hotwire.com and type in your dates. You'll get an estimate. LAX is huge and several rent a car companies are nearby. The companies all have free vans that pic you up outside the baggage claim and take you to the car lot. Enterprise usually has good rates. Compact cars from Thrifty are crap.

I like Hotwire but if you use them and have to extend, the rental company will be happy to extend at their regular rate. If you use one of the other bargain hunter sites that go directly through the company (like the aformentioned Thrifty), you can extend your rental for the same price. Food for thought. That said, you can get great cars on Hotwire for under 20 bucks a day.
