I'm planning a visit to California this summer.

Just wondering what's the coolest city in the state of California?

The big three are all cool in their own ways. Honestly you have to go to all three to get a true feel for California's city flavor. When you ask about cool it would be helpful if you would specify what qualifies as cool to you when it comes to a city. Cool is so subjective especially in this very large and diverse state. Also when you say city do you mean the big three or are you also including smaller cities?

It depends on what appeals to you, however I think that these are the two coolest road trips.

You definately have to start in LA. Read the forums, get some tour books and decide what you want to see. Definately get to the beach at some point. Malibu, Santa Monica, Venice, and Redondo are my favorites.n
Then you decide which direction to go in.
If you want to just kick back and enjoy the climate rent a car and drive to San Diego. Very laid back, beautiful weather, friendly people, lots of cools shops and easy access to Tijuana, Mexico.
If you are more into an artistic, cultural, urban vibe, rent a car and drive to San Francisco on Hwy 1 (Pacific Coast Hwy). It takes longer, but the scenery is worth it. Take a detour north of Santa Barbara to visit Solvang . Stop and visit Hurst Castle, and the Winchester house, and pay a few bucks to travel the 17 mile drive for photo opps. That will take you about 1.5 days . SF is loaded with museums, art galleries, theatres and great restuarants. Other than laying on a sunny beach, if you can't find it in SF, it doesn't exsist.
Have fun on your trip

I grew up in Port Hueneme and it can get cool at differant times of the year. Maybe because it is on the coast and the fog rolls in during the evening even in the summer months can be one reason. Also is has a south facing beach and the location can also contribute to its coolness factor when you check for the average tempurature. I know that the area has few hot days and has mostly a mild climate. It could also help that the area is not so overun with people like the LA area. You know how it is the more people you put in a room the warmer the room gets. Maybe the same can be said about local climates. Port Hueneme has less than 30,000 people so not that many to increase the general temperature of the area, helping to keep it cool. Not sure if that can be scientifically calculated or not, so the science may be bogus altogether. You may want to do a study of average coolness within the region to determine what area is the coolest. I think that you can find some helpfull information at the CityData.com main site. For me though I also like Oxnard and Ventura. Both are also relatively cool areas to live in, and with me living here the coolness factor continues to increase. Hope that helps.

Probably the further north you go the cooler it will be!
