This is one of the few threads where everyone's take is basically correct (except for thinking the music scene of 25 years ago persists) and Sampaguita's take is outstanding, as well as that of following Pedro's dream!

Yes, you'll find bandmates pretty quickly. Purchase "Music Connection" magazine for its band players' wanteds classifieds and local studios and services, or check out what the mag offers online http://www.musicconnection.com

You may not be able to play for pay, though. You'll be touring elsewhere. Again, join the union for movie/tv session work, and to quiz your local about the situations here (the M.U. has referred musicians to me as photo clients, for instance.)

Musicians swarm to live around Hollywood, Hollywood Hills like Laurel Canyon, Studio City, Los Feliz etc. when they're starting out. As they succeed, you'll find them anywhere they can afford. As far as the recording studios, try Burbank, Hollywood, Santa Monica, basically anywhere the zoning permits. Trivia- a lot of Nirvana's epochal "Nevermind" was recorded in my highly unfashionable locale, Van Nuys.

Also, I left Colorado to come to LA to persue visual arts. I've never looked back. It's been awesome. Just do it. If you fall flat on your face, who gives a *****, you tried. If you make it, then awesome. If you move back to where your friends and family are they'll always accept you.
