I am about to book a hotel for next week (into Memorial Day weekend) and was wondering what the parking situation was.

I have never been to L.A. but I have heard stories where even pharmacies will valet your car. Weird. What about hotels? In general, do you have to pay for parking or is it free for those staying there? Looking at staying in the Santa Monica/Hollywood area.

Not a dumb question. Most hotels have some kind of parking available for guests, including many with parking structures with valet as an "option" if you don't want to self-park. If it's a very congested area with limited parking, the valet parking "might" be a requirement b/c they simply don't have enough room for everyone to self-park.

I think you will really have to investigate the issue at each hotel individually...but again most hotels understand that tourists or business travelers to LA will be using a car. Just ask if parking is included in the room rate before you book.

parking can range from free to upwards of $30+ per night depending on where you stay. most higher end hotels in the more popular areas will have a some kind of nightly fee to store your car.

It depends on the hotel, but most upscale properties charge a daily fee. Still I've had out-of-town guests get free parking packages/upgrades... just call the hotel directly and specifically ask them to search their specials. However, given it's Memorial weekend you may be out of luck.

hotels such as the Hampton Inn or Holiday Inn express catagory usually have free parking, some others will offer vouchers, but the higher priced, upscale class will charge from $15.00 to $30 per day, especially in the heavily traffic areas or resort locations.

Thanks everyone. So far I lucked out and found free parking. Then again, I have been looking at the "cheaper" hotels (< $150). Excited about visiting for the first time.

If you're looking to stay for a full week you might try one of the extended stay hotels. I stayed in one in Arcadia a couple months back and it was really reasonable, like somewhere around 100 a day iirc, plus you got amenities like mini stove and kitchen w/ cabinets etc. Parking was free and theres plenty of it in that area unlike Hollywood. Its about maybe 20-30 minutes to Hollywood from there I think, not during rush hour.
