I don't see why Birmingham couldn't support a team, NFL would be extremely hard with Bama (), and Auburn football easily ruling the state. NBA, MLB, or MLS would be the best bets. Not sure about baseball in Alabama so I'm sure NBA would be the easiest to attract and support.

Why frown on Bama lol ?? LSU took that whooping like a real man ,maybe next year I guess. You guys have a great program that is becoming a threat to Bama. And I agree that university football would be challinging in Alabama.Alabama has a solid baseball history so I could see MLB or NBA in the future.

Don't get me started on that game. We've been a threat to Bama though, just like every other SEC team.

LSU also has a solid baseball history, and New Orleans has the Zephyrs, I could see an expansion team in New Orleans when the area gets more populated, and maybe a new league including more southern cities like San Antonio, Charlotte, NO, Nashville/Memphis, and Birmingham.

An MLB team takes the most population to support. The average stadium holds about 45,000 people and there are 81 home games a year, so that would mean that every single person in the Jackson metro would have to go to 5 games a year. For comparison, for 8 Saints home games and 70,000 fans, the average resident of the New Orleans metro has to go to a Saints game once every 2 years for a sellout.

One other thing that helps New Orleans is that there are other largish metros within a short drive. Baton Rouge, Biloxi, Houma all help with TV numbers if not gameday attendance. They show games as far away as Pensacola- it's closer to New Orleans than it is to Tampa.

My dad went to college in Jackson, and my uncle and his family live in Brandon, and it's a nice place, but it just doesn't have the size to support any major league team right now, and unless it were to go on an unprecedented growth spurt and zoom past a few other major league cities, I don't see it getting one. But then again, the metro isn't twice the size of Jackson's and we have two pro teams right now.

Thought they had 81 games a year, 40 being home games? Not an MLB fan so I don't know, but if we got one I'd surely be watching a new sport. New Orleans has in a 200mi radius, over 6 million people, in a 100mi radius, 3 million people. Metro New Orleans has a little over twice the population of metro Jackson. Much of the Saints support comes from the rest of south Louisiana and the gulf coast to the east.

162 games a year.

It would be interesting to compare those radius numbers with other cities. I think we'd do pretty well compared to a lot of western cities. The one I'm thinking of especially is Salt Lake. There's not much other than Provo within a pretty big radius of them.

Atlanta has over 5 million in its metro alone, and just lost its hockey team. Houston, as you know, is over 6m and doesn't have hockey.

We do, so does BR, and other LA cities. Hockey is so limited to colder cities, as those are the areas to have a real interest in the sport.
