Mexicans in Louisiana (Shreveport: 2015, how much, home)

Are there many? Texas seems to have clearly defined white, black, and Mexican sections throughout the state, but I get the feeling the large Mexican community wouldn't exist if not for Texas having been taken from Mexico way back when. Could French being the main minority language (as opposed to Spanish) be a major deterrent to them moving in? Not saying I disagree with it, but I really am astounded at just how much major institutions in the US accommodate Spanish speakers. I say good for them but it seems impractical. For example, a Kroger in Houston has Spanish signage on the outside (in the colors of the Mexican flag!) If Texas had ended up in the hands of the British, I'm sure the state's new rulers wouldn't have been so accommodating.

Well we have a Spanish language radio station here in Shreveport and various Hispanic businesses. But there aren't as many here as Texas. I do see them having become part of the city however. Construction, lawn care, auto shops, etc.

First, your assumption that French is the main minority language is very much mistaken. Most Cajuns speak English at home and in every other aspect of their lives. In fact, there's been for decades efforts to try to preserve the French language in LA. That's how endangered Cajun French as a language is.

Second, poor immigrants generally don't care what the local language is of the area they choose to settle in. All they care about is putting food on the table.

Third, minority advertising (i.e. Kroger in Houston) is not a matter of who ruled the area before they arrived. It's a matter of the sheer mass of the present population.

I don't disagree with any of these, but French (or Creole, which I do know is very different but with a few similarities) is to Louisiana as Spanish is to Texas, no? As in being the dominant language of the state before the US took over?

You are right about French being dominant before the US took over, with Spanish still an important minority language, for LA was Spanish from 1763-1800. The latter is 3 yrs before the US bought it from Napoleon.
