I have always been extremely impressed with Monroe. The people are so polite and polished....many of them with the most lovely accents. Good gyms. Some beautiful neighborhoods.(not necessarily a bad thing). And it's as close to a 'University town in the Mountains' as you'll find in Louisiana (the highest point in the state is nearby, and it's basically a hill).

Monroe is absolutely the best fit. 4 hospitals, 2 medical malls, too many clinics, and special needs medical offices. I couldn't think of a more better fit as far as a quiet sufficient town like Monroe/West Monroe. No doubt in my mind you'd probably work here, but even the vicinity like Ruston, Farmerville, Sterlington, or Winnsboro are great small towns and are no more that 30 mins away.

We are also looking for place to retire and just visited the Alexandria/Pineville area. Beautiful scenery and the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital is highly rated.

Thank you all so much for the great information. I did see Louisiana on the list of 'retiree friendly' states, which makes me happy because Louisiana has long been a favorite of mine. Monroe sounds wonderful!

My vote would be with Natchitoches instead. I think Northwest Louisiana is much nicer than Northeast.
