Hello,
In a few years' time my husband will be retiring and our kids will be in college. We are looking forward to moving out of New York state and making a new start in a completely different place. However, we have lots of ideas on where we could go, which makes it very difficult, Lol!

I am hoping some of you can give me your thoughts on the best northern Louisiana towns/cities? I am an RN and plan to continue working for many years, so close proximity (30 min drive) is a must. Other than that, it is wide open for us! I would much appreciate any information you can give!

I have always been extremely impressed with Monroe. The people are so polite and polished....many of them with the most lovely accents. Good gyms. Some beautiful neighborhoods.

Ruston is nice, but VERY repressed and Fundamentalist (not necessarily a bad thing). And it's as close to a 'University town in the Mountains' as you'll find in Louisiana (the highest point in the state is nearby, and it's basically a hill).

Monroe has a large 'problem demographic'. Ruston does not. Personally, I'd go for a good area in Monroe.

Monroe is absolutely the best fit. 4 hospitals, 2 medical malls, too many clinics, and special needs medical offices. I couldn't think of a more better fit as far as a quiet sufficient town like Monroe/West Monroe. No doubt in my mind you'd probably work here, but even the vicinity like Ruston, Farmerville, Sterlington, or Winnsboro are great small towns and are no more that 30 mins away.

Default Retirement

We are also looking for place to retire and just visited the Alexandria/Pineville area. Beautiful scenery and the St. Frances Cabrini Hospital is highly rated.

We looked at Monroe/West Monroe, and Shreveport/Bossier City. We are now faced with trying to decide.

It is nice that Social Security is not subject to state tax! Property taxes in all 3 areas are reasonable. Ditto for utilities. The only drawback we found is in the mineral rights. The sellers will try to keep the mineral rights, especially in the Shreveport/Bossier City area.

Thank you all so much for the great information. I did see Louisiana on the list of 'retiree friendly' states, which makes me happy because Louisiana has long been a favorite of mine. Monroe sounds wonderful!

My vote would be with Natchitoches instead. I think Northwest Louisiana is much nicer than Northeast.
