We also love to discover local foods. (This thing called the Hot Brown intrigues us.) In nature we prefer ambling walks or biking versus more aggressive hiking or mountain biking. We're big fans of national parks, so Mammoth Cave is definitely on our list if we end up in the area.

Oh you will love it then!Lots of people take weekend trips to Chicago, Gatlinburg, Memphis, Cincy, St Louis, Owensboro, Nashville and the Central Kentucky Bluegrass region of Kentucky where I live, which is really pretty with lots of horse farms, etc. Lots of Historic little towns like Bardstown, midway and Danville.
And there is some of the most beautiful, breathtaking natural scenery in America. Check out the Red River Gorge, Natural Bridge, Daniel Boone National Forest, Cumberland falls, Land between the Lakes, and like you mentioned of course Mammoth Cave.

The Indiana has all the main stores you need...all the big box chains, walmart, Best Buy, a couple targets, meijer, etc. But the mall scene is a bit lacking in S. Indiana. The main mall in the Indiana suburbs is anchored by Jc Penny and Dillard's. Not bad, but not a "high end mall." You will have to go to Louisville even for Macy's, Von Maur (the local Nordstrom style store), and all the higher end boutiques, and even places like Banana Republic.

Guys, ignore N.Olikee. He is a well known flamer on these boards, and has been very jealous of Louisville's success for a couple years. He is simply an Austin booster.

He has hijacked many threads here, and will not heed any warnings in the past, so he has been banned. He has also flamed other users on other forums, especially those critical of Austin, even if constructive.

Please, back to the OP's questions.

Wow, those are some beautiful places! You are a great ambassador for Kentucky! Thanks for sharing!

Is there a difference in sales tax or property tax or something along those lines that would make living in IN more or less attractive than living in KY? I really appreciate your responses!

Greetings,

Yes, FYI the city of Louisville collects an additonal income tax of 2.2% in addition to state income tax.

Why don't you check into a much more affordable place like Indiana? You might be surprised.

Indiana, currently is the most affordable place to live in the USA tax wise.

Also, IMO - Indianapolis, IN would present better opportunities for you.

Cheers...

The 2.2% tax is an occupational tax not an income tax. If you are employed in Jefferson County, 2.2% will be deducted no matter where you live.

There is not enough taxable reason to pick either Kentucky or Indiana as the place to live. The biggest drawback to Indiana are the bridges. Those pesky bridges can destroy a leisurely commute to/from work with the speed of a guillotine.

Disagree. Louisville has MUCH more arts, way more soul, and substantially better arts and restaurants than Indianapolis, even though Indy is "better known." Let's not try to hijack the thread. The OP wants to be in Louisville, and given their needs, the city is a much better fit than Indy. Just ask the indie coffee shop owners from Please and Thank You why they relocated to trendy Nulu from Indianapolis and you will get anecdotal evidence as to why Louisville is a much more "independent and weird" city than a homogenized city like Indianapolis.

The bridges are not THAT bad. The Kennedy can be rough between 730-9 am and 330-530 pm, but not compared to most top 50 metros. The Sherman Minton (New Albany) almost NEVER has traffic. As an Oldham County suburbanite, I doubt you have much experience with the west side of the metro, Tom. Still, your sentiments are representative of the sentiments that "divide" Louisville metro from her nearly 300,000 resident Indiana suburbs.
