Thinking of relocating to Etown. Have been doing research and came across articles about sinkholes. They say that KY is in the top 10 for states prone to sinkholes!
Is this true? Anyone have problems with this? I heard you won't get coverage from insurance company. Concerned and don't want to invest in a home that could possibly be swallowed up by the earth! Please help!

Approximately 40% of the USA has the kinds of minerals underground that cause sinkholes. Most sinkholes are slow and hardly noticed. However, Florida especially has a lot of dramatic sinkholes that happen suddenly. I've never heard of problems getting insurance coverage for sinkholes. Where does that information come from? You can buy a rider on your home owner's insurance for it. It isn't very expensive, we were paying $8/month back in 2000.

Much of Kentucky is karst, but damage due to sinkholes is quite rare here. So don't panic, but if you are in an area which is karst and has a history of sinkholes opening up (most are just bowl-shaped indentations in the ground and never cave in), have any property you're considering inspected.

Most sinkholes are known as subsidence sinkholes that have slowly subsided over time. The collapse sinkholes such as the Corvette Museum and the cases you hear about in FL and MO are quite rare. Still they can occur (although rare) so if you can insure against them then it isn't a bad idea.

Yes I live in South Florida. Sinkholes especially central Florida have happened. I do remember the collapse at the corvette museum. Was just curious about the subject. I can't recall which article it was that mentioned no insurance coverage. Regardless, we are relocating next year. Just a bit nervous about moving to another state that is completely different. I was born and raised in South Florida and have lived here most of my adult life. Weather will definitely be an adjustment.

Is this true? Anyone have problems with this? I heard you won't get coverage from insurance company. Concerned and don't want to invest in a home that could possibly be swallowed up by the earth! Please help!
