I am moving to Louisville in about 20 days. I need help on trying to find an apartment, loft or condo. I would like a one bedroom apartment with wood floors. Also, I have a small dog. I am 26 years old female and would like the area to be safe enough to be able to walk my do at night times. I started to look for areas close to my new job(downtown) some of the places I have searched online so far are the Glass work lofts, Fifth Street Terraces and some other lofts in downtown until I came to find out that those areas will not be safe at night times. I would prefer to have a loft but I have not been able to find any in the east of Louisville. My budget is 600-750 per month. Please Help!!! I am coming to visit in a week and would like to know where to start. Thank you in advance!

Huh? DT is plenty safe at night. The coolest lofts are the mercantile, whiskey row, and glassworks. The Magnolia Place lofts in Old Louisville are also nice, as well as the Reynolds LOfts near UofL. You will have a VERY tough time finding a good loft in your price range.

The ones that are in your range are the Lofts of Broadway, which are currently located in the only "bad" part of downtown east of 9th st, but as the housing projects are vacated nearby it, is should be a great deal in the coming months.

Also downtown the Central Park lofts are nice because they have secure underground parking and you would never have to step out your door to a dark or quiet city street late at night.

Shoud you prefer a more upscale residential setting, there are some upscale lofts know as the Renaissance Lofts in Crescent Hill on Grinstead Dr.

Finally, should you prefer cookie cutter suburban, there are some lofts in the somewhat walkable new urbanist development known as Norton Commons on the northeast side.

This is not an exhaustive list but rather a few that come to mind.

I'm not sure what the costs for any of the rentals are in Norton Commons, but that would be a great area to look into and it is actually only about a 20 minute drive to downtown.

26...single? No kids, and a dog. EASY - Highlands!! Tons of rentals in your price range! It's easiest to find one by wandering around or craigslist. I live in the Highlands, I am 30/female. I walk home at night often, and have never been hassled. Lot's to do and see in the Highlands, many great restaurants, bars, shops, etc.. it's the only place I'd live in. Yes, I am a Highlands snob

Well said! I agree as well. I have a TON of friends that live in the highlands area and they all love it. saftey wise, it's perfectly fine. I used to walk around there are night even when I was in Highschool. If you are out walking your dog you will most likely pass someone with a dog as well every 10 feet!

the highlands definately suits your needs (except for the loft thing). not a ton of lofts in this town as compared to other places. i would be hesitant to walk around downtown at night if i were a single female and i definately would not walk old louisville at night.

if you can get past the loft thing, the highlands is the best nabe in this town. most apartments are in old, turn of the century homes that have been updated and converted to apts. the area is full of walkable restaurants, bars and shops. it is also safe and occupied by very cool open minded and accepting people. it's a 5-10 minute drive to downtown. my friend lives on bonnycastle and rides his bike to work downtown almost every day.

the highlands is also the most dog-friendly area in town. two dog parks, one on morton, one at cochran hill. not to mention that cherokee park is right there and is really one of the best things this city has to offer.

as some on this board know, i am not totally enamored with louisville. the one thing that makes this city special is the highlands. i've traveled a lot and have yet to find another place that compares.

you should have no trouble finding a nice place in your budget. good luck and welcome.
