The Greyhound site says the route is 194 miles and 6 hours. It must go to Cincy. I've never seen a bus on or off I-64 between Lex-Lou. It was for this reason, I said originally that a rental car is best.
Yes, I did a search for a weekday run and they do show that long ride, plus a transfer, so they have to be going through Cincy. No more direct service to Lexington anymore, I guess. What a hassle.
An application has been made by a Louisville bus firm for a Federally subsidized service between Ashland and St. Louis. Don't know if it will come to fruition, or if when.

Can't we just get some decent mode to and from Lexington/Louisville first? At least to cover us until they get the light-rail completed between the two cities.
It's quite simple. The costs are greater than the anticipated revenues. Only a subsidized firm would be able to do the service. The great American business plan, you pay the taxes so 50 people can get a service and 1 or 2 people get wealthy owning a subsidized firm.

Well, I agree a rental car is best...but you arent a broke college student However, maybe the OP isnt a broke college student like I used to be! If I could save 50 bucks as a college student, I would have taken the long way and added 3 hours to my trip.
I used to take that Lexington/Louisville Greyhound quite a bit as I was one of those poor college students, and couldnt afford a car. The bus back then didnt seem that empty, though the kids who used it most were from KSU in Frankfort, not UK kids. It would be unusable today as the website says the station is out on New Circle Road, not downtown anymore. It was possible to walk from UK to the old station on Limestone Street. Not anymore.
For car rentals, Budget's one-way destination fee is either a lot less or waived due to the proximity of Lex/Louisville. Total cost for a 24-hour time period with drop off in Lexington is around $65 (most others are ~$150). Considering the Greyhound price, taxi/bus fares, time (5+ hours?), it'll be close argument. Age may be an issue (under 25) for the car rental. Flying (Louis > Lex) would be around $400.
Also of note, while downtown Louisville is VERY safe during the day, the Greyhound station and the west end of downtown does attract some shady characters and some vagrants, especially late at night on weekdays. So, just be smart and pretend you are in the worst part of Bombay or any major Indian city in a less than desirable area.
There is no part of Louisville at any time of day or night that is in any way comparable to the worst part of Bombay. That's ludicrous.

Even better, one only has to act like they are from the semi-worst part of Bombay.
