The link would effectively create over 15 miles of connected trails along the Ocmulgee River.
The grant from the Department of Natural Resources would go to build a connection between the trail at Amerson to the one in the Riverside Cemeteries.
President of Newtown Macon Josh Rogers said this small connection will make a big difference for Maconites.
"Because we've got miles of walk-able and bike-able trails in Amerson, and we've got the same thing at Riverside Cemetery and Rosehill. So this one little piece leverages a huge network which then becomes accessible to everyone walking and biking," Rogers said.
This connection between the cemetery and Amerson will cost around $600,000. Rogers said they plan to raise the rest of the money from other local organizations and private donors.
Rogers said if everything works out they should be able to begin construction next Spring.
