GREAT PIC'S... Macon has Tons of History.. I still say Macon has the best Urban Bones out of all the 2 Tiers in GA, not including Savannah. Some areas look like a Northern City.
There are enough quality photographs here that with proper commentary you could have a fair-sized book. A few of them are unremarkable, but most are very good, and a couple are outstanding. I particularly enjoyed the frontal shot of the silos because it reminded me of Picasso's outdoor sculpture in Chicago.
Another photo I liked is the one showing the "Colored" entrance to the train terminal. I've taken that picture as well, and would have liked if you could have also included the plaque that explains the history. Most of the people on this forum probably don't remember riding the trains to Macon, but I do (I'm 67). That said, as a child I wasn't aware of how segregated public conveyances like this were, and I think it's important that we continue to document and remember how wrong a culture can be sometimes.
The photos showing the construction are the least interesting, but the one I'm most ambivalent about (maybe even annoyed with), is the shot of the Mercer bridge. The idea that anything so mundane and ordinary could ever be considered a "gateway" simply boggles my mind. If that's the best Macon can do, then we're going to be in for some tough times ahead!
Thanks for the comments! I should have taken a photo of the plaque at the train station to better explain that photo. I'm glad that the city preserved that piece of history. A lot of history isn't pretty and I believe that by remembering both the good and bad sides of history, we as a society will grow.
Great photos as always. Whenever I have time when going back and forth from Savannah to Atlanta, I'll get off the interestate and drive through downtown Macon, over Mercer Hill into Vineville and then back up 41 or Riverside Drive to 75. Such a pretty old town -- even the rundown parts have beauty, as your photos show.
It's been said many times on this forum that Macon gets an unfair bad rap. I often wonder "what if" and looking at photos like this it's easy to imagine that, had history and politics been a little different, Macon would be Georgia's largest city or at least the capital.
