Down In Dixie, every grocery store has a big selection of "seasoned" greens, on the canned veggie isle. Collard, turnip, mustard, and even mixed greens.

My wife is trying to find some in Madison, and so far she just gets funny looks.

Down here both "Glory" & "Margaret Holmes" are big. I would settle for anything!

Thanks for any help...

Hmm, well, you might tell her to try Woodman's, either in the canned vegetables section or in the "ethnic food" aisle. I know it's not really ethnic per se, but Woodman's uses that term for anything that isn't whitebread Midwestern.

If she strikes out there, she might have better luck trying in the Milwaukee area. It's a larger city with a much more diverse population than Madison, and I suspect that she'd have a relatively easy time finding Southern-style food items. Canned goods last a long time, so a trip every month or two ought to be enough to stock up. And there's plenty to see and do on a trip there anyway.

Good luck, and let us know if you find what you're looking for!

There's an African American owned grocery chain in Milwaukee called Lena's. You'd better believe they've got the canned southern-style greens. The selection is astonishing.

Thanks! Would any location lend itself to someone making a quick trip from Madison? Safety and traffic are a concern, for a mother with kids, without me along. Any heads-up appreciated. Thanks again!

Your best bet would be the location at Midtown Center: 4061 N 54th Street, Milwaukee.

Traffic in Milwaukee isn't that bad.

We were just at Woodmans on Madison's east side (on Milwaukee Street just off Stoughton Road) for our weekly grocery run, and I took a moment to look at the canned vegetable aisle. I found both Sylvia's and Glory brand canned seasoned greens about midway down the aisle.

Mmmmm... those are wonderful. Haven't been to one since the last time I travelled in the south, and that's been a decade or more. When my mom was still alive and criss-crossing the US, before the cancer invaded her brain and took her off the road, she'd plan her route and meal stops based on Waffle House locations. She could eat more pecan waffles at a sitting than anyone else I've ever known.

If you ever come up to Madison for a visit, go with your family to one of the Original Pancake House restaurants here. I think there are two, one in Monona and one out on University Ave on the west side, and they serve simply the best pancakes I have ever eaten. They make IHOP look like a poor excuse for imitation pancakes.

Yes, Waffle House is amazing. Unfortunately the nearest location to Wisconsin is Indianapolis. Makes me think .... maybe it's time for a road trip to Indianapolis ...
