I think we should gather up some "care packages" and mail off some "items of Maine traditions".

I don't want to be greedy when there's plenty here.

little flying #%@#%'s....

Have had this finch feeder on the deck since late winter, the seed it in had started to mold and we didnt see any birds near it well before that, till today a gold finch came up and was sitting on the top perch, trying to peck out the non molded seed.

So I went to clean out the feeder, dump the old stuff in the treeline; got attacked in the process.

They normally dont bother me much but these ones did; had to stop about 95% of the way done with the job cause I was too itchy. I'm waiting for the sun to go down and i'd rather contend with the skeeters. They dont kamikaze themselves into your ears, eyes and up your shorts like the flies....

edit: I should say for the most part they are better than they were 2 weeks ago here. We spent an hour in the hammocks in the back woods yesterday and it was tolerable.

I've got one of those tennis racket style bug zappers that you work by hand. Works well, you can hear the little critters pop when they hit the energized grid. Only problem is you'd be swinging that around all of the time instead of doing what you need to do outdoors. Have seen NO blackflies here.......yet.

My neighbor last summer had a zip lock bag of water at her porch door. Curious- I asked her why.
She said that it was to repel the flies from the door- ie to stop them entering the house.
Clearly it worked, and then I noticed other people doing the same thing.
It has to do with the flies vision- making mirrors of distortion, and the flies avoid the area.

To keep misquitos from entering the house, if you have house planters near a door, plant "lemon grass' in them. Keeps the buggers away for sure !

Black Fly Info - Maine Nature News

They are here in Union. Not biting just yet. Fedco sells a variety of user friendly insect clothing:

Organic Growers Supply - Clothing

I love the bug baffler shirt.
