Believe it or not, I haven't seen a black fly since my college days in Orono in the 70's.

On my rare trips home to Maine it's either Christmas or I just get lucky and miss the season. Most of my camping trips have been in September and October, a few times in the heat of summer - I am not a summer person. I have only vague recollections of black fly misery. But bugs love me and I remember being concerned that I might get bit enough to cause an allergic reaction.

What's a bug hat?

A bug hat is made out of tinfoil with two electrodes attached to a small capacitor discharge unit that sends out a jolt to fry the bugs. Unfortunately, the charge travels inward as well and tends to burn hair.

Tin foil hats do tend to damage what's inside of them.

Post of the day right there. I'd rep you, but the board software says I have to spread some around first.

(BTW, a bug hat is a soft-brimmed hat with netting attached that covers the face and neck. LLBean sells hats impregnated with bug dope that also keeps bugs away.)

Perhaps if you coat the inside of the hat with a layer of spray foam you can reduce that annoying odor.
