I read the covenants. The existing snowmobile trail to Shin Pond will be allowed. Roxanne kept a choice piece for herself.

People have successfully done this in other states, and have (almost) succeeded in areas such as yellowstone, or Glacier, or even Yosemite. Even Denali is on the list of attempted border zones. I have no issue in general wth public land, if they could gaurentee that this is the maximum extent of the park, and that no boundary "grey" area would ever be instituted in regards to hunting/atving/snowmobiling/trapping/and most inportantly logging, then i am sure there would be alot more support for it. Such issues rarley happen in National Forests, as for the most part they allow it, although it is much more regulated.

This is quimbys land, and she should have a say with it, my qualms are with taxes and what is regulated outside the borders of the park, which can and have been regulated elsewhere.

For a good example you all know about outsiders influencing votes you need to not look further than maines Bear referndum, or the upcoming gun control vote.

I'm curious about this too. I don't think there is a lot to draw any huge number of visitors to the area (beyond those who already come there).

It looks like around 17.7Million acres of Maine are forested.

Roughly half a million acres of Maine's forest is Federal or state land.

If you increased this to a full million acres, would it increase tourist flow?

If you changed this to 5 million acres, would it increase tourist flow?

I am not saying that tourists would stop coming to Maine. Tourists come to Maine already, because Maine already is 92% forest. I do not see that changing the ownership of land is going to increase how many people want to visit Maine.

Is there some great 'ooh aww' thing to see in this area? Is there a petrified forest? Is there a grand canyon? Are there giant redwood trees? Is there something so unique about this segment of forest unlike all other segments of forest? No.

What things will draw tourists? Coast line with small fishing villages and lighthouses will draw tourists. Maine already has 3,000 miles of coastline drawing tourists.

A Las Vegas style casino district will draw tourists. A Six Flags type amusement park will draw tourists. But these big tourist attractions are not in discussion. Maine is forest and coast line. That is what Maine has to offer. I do not see how changing the ownership of a bunch of forest will attract any more tourists.

We also need to remember how big the Maine woods is. I'm agreeing with Submariner, BTW. His post came in while I was writing this one.

GO TO GOOgle maps and look at the size of Mount Desert Island. The whole island is only 70,000 acres.

Now take the island and compare it to the size of the Maine Woods. The woods part of Maine is probably about 20,000 square miles(all of Maine is 35,000 square miles) or 13 million acres. Her gift "through the heart of Maine", represents 0.006 percent of the Maine Woods.

And while I feel for the people living nearby, they are using one of the same arguments that the native people are using. What is ironic is that when it hits close to home it suddenly makes a difference. Reminds me of the hypocritical Senator who voted against funds for Louisiana in Katrina, but then wanted funds for Hurricane Sandy in his area; he saw no hypocrisy.

Lets keeps some perspective here.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Katahd...ional_Monument

What its called and where it is.

And it is the National Park Service that get it after all: https://www.nps.gov/kaww/index.htm Apparently they were ready to go with a website for this tiny little parcel. My wife actually knew someone named Dearborn who owned 140,000 acres in the Adirondacks back in the 70's.

Let's go tourists. Can a theme park be far behind?
