Generally speaking, would a realtor in the Portland area be able to show homes throughout the entire region? I'm thinking Scarborough up to Brunswick. Or should I look at getting different realtors for the Portland area vs Brunswick/Bath area?

Thanks!

I can only speak for myself as an individual agent that does not work on a "team." Portland based, I've recently helped sell homes as far south as Kennebunk, as far north as Auburn, as far west as Bridgton and far east as Topsham. A "team" of agents might have one that lives in Saco and another that lives in Freeport and would like to keep you in the team. You'd still have to adjust to two different agent's personalities and work styles, which isn't easy. My company has 5 offices between Kennebunk and Brunswick and I network extensively with management and agents there to keep myself updated on those markets. I also have access to market reports by zip code for any town in Maine, so I can let a buyer know what's going on a micro level, town by town. Just as when selling a home, a buyer should interview 2-3 agents and ask those tough questions.

There are few active agents in much of Northern Maine. This is true in many rural areas in our country. My house was built in 1885. I am the third owner. Some of the families that founded our town in 1832 are still here. A person can graduate from high school, go four years to a teacher's college, come back to his home town to teach and retire after 40 years from the same school that he attended as a child. It happens.

There is far more to marketing than selling houses. Knowing the job market in different occupations is a huge advantage.

My wife and I are looking at property from Brunswick to Wiscasset. Our buyer's agent is based in Bath. I don't think she would want to work in the Portland area.

Thanks for the replies! I have a firm in mind, based on a recommendation from a friend, who I'll be calling. I'll ask if they're comfortable being a buyer's agent in both areas.
