Got a few questions about living in Oxford County, say around Newry or Bethel or Fryeburg:

(1) How much development is the area experiencing?
(2) Population seems to be hovering around 57k. Are real estate prices staying the same, appreciating, or devaluing?
(3) How many people "from away" are moving in?
(4) How viable would commuting from Newry/Bethel/Fryeburg to Portland or Augusta be, especially in winter?
(5) Stow: anyone have any knowledge about this town?

The only development I see is in properties like Dollar Stores which serve rural areas

(2) Population seems to be hovering around 57k. Are real estate prices staying the same, appreciating, or devaluing?

The Sunday River and Sugarloaf skii areas are seeing increasing prices. Otherwise stable.

(3) How many people "from away" are moving in?

The people moving in are mostly retirees who don't need jobs. They don't need to commute. They sell ordinary homes in the NY / DC corridor for big bucks and buy better homes in Maine for under half the price.

(4) How viable would commuting from Newry/Bethel/Fryeburg to Portland or Augusta be, especially in winter?

If you are self employed and willing to take the risks, it is possible. If you need to be somewhere on time, you better get a very early start from places like Newry.

I have relatives in Oxford County, but do not live there. Commutes on secondary roads in winter in Maine require early starts.

I'm in Maine for the next 8 months working on a project. One of my project colleagues commutes from Poland to Waterville daily. That is 60 miles each way but it's all highway.

Bethel to Augusta or Bethel to Portland would also be about 60 miles but it would be all back roads, so figure 90 minutes each way.
