Just spent 5 nights in a rental apartment in Owls Head. That whole peninsula is beautiful from Owls Head down through South Thomaston, Spruce Head, Tenant's Harbor to Port Clyde. It's still nearby to shops, eateries and medical services in the Rockland, Rockport, Camden area, but it's a lot quieter out there - besides the scattered homes, forest and waterfront, there isn't a lot out there but lighthouses, lobster companies and a general store here and an inn there... cell phone signal was surprisingly spotty, but I guess even there, not enough customers to justify much tower coverage. There are a good many public lands and beaches on the peninsula too. I have visited the peninsula on other trips but it was nice to get some focus time there this past week! :-)

Also have many good memories of Owls Head, Birch Pt. Beach...
Yep! We visited the lighthouse and its beach, Owls Head Harbor, Crescent Beach, Birch Point Beach, Clark Island, Marshall Point, plus all the town landings on the waterfronts - which are the hub of activity in these small coastal villages. I actually tore up my ankle the day before the trip :-( ...so actual hiking was out of the question, but I had an air cast on my ankle and a hiking staff to balance me, and I hobbled around okay, and let my guests do the more taxing walks on their own. Despite some dodgy weather and a cranky ankle, I still had a real nice time :-).
I bought a small piece of furniture from someone in Owls Head. Man, he has gorgeous views from his property!
I'll bet! Owls Head is a sub-peninsula off the north end of the larger St George peninsula - the whole thing is beautiful and you're right next door, right?
Love Owl's Head. It used to be part of South Thomaston until 1921 (Didn't Thomaston used to be part of Rockland??) and the location really is hard to beat. All these terrific little beaches in close proximity to each other, the newly reopened General Store and your never more than 10 minutes to downtown Rockland
There are some reasonable priced houses for sale in Owl's Head with city water. I've been watching them online.
How do beaches work in Maine? Can anyone walk along the shore regardless of who owns the land? Are some public beaches restricted to residents? Do private beaches require a membership?
Lucia Beach is a private beach for residents of that road only. The other beaches (i.e. Crescent, Crocketts, the beach in the Owl's Head Lighthouse Park and Birch Point) I believe are public. The latter definitely is.

I can vouch for the blueberry muffins and the "7-napkin burger" at the Owls Head general store :-) ...plus like you say, if you want to go to a store or a restaurant, Rockland has most anything you might want and is 10 minutes away.
I actually styed at the Craignair Inn 30 years ago with a girlfriend, and returned there on this trip last week for dinner with some family. The food was yummy way back when, but apparently they just got a new chef and the dinner we had last week was outstanding! :-)
