Has anyone gone down Ledge Falls in Baxter State Park? It's a natural water slide. A gatekeeper told us about it yesterday so we checked it out. It looks scary as heck because of the rushing water but ohhhhhhhhh how I want to try this. Is there a relatively safe place to start? I know you have to stay out of the center at least when the water is as fast as it is right now. I don't see how we could start at the top and not get hurt but to start where it looks safe would last about six seconds. I especially don't want the kids we're taking up there to get hurt.

Tubers do it all the time. The right side of your photo will be the only spot with water by the end of July. Kids have a ball at it.

A similar spot to slide, is Step Falls in Grafton Notch.
As kids we used to ride our bikes the 12 miles and Mom would make sure we took cardboard boxes to slide on. Well, trying to pedal and hold onto the cardboard was a pain, so we'd "lose" the boxes and slide anyway. After an enjoyable afternoon, we'd sit on our bike seats all the way home because the seat of our pants were gone! Mom was never too happy about it.

Thanks! Tubing makes a lot more sense than sliding. I'll add a couple of tubes to the list of things to take with us.

I'll have another question for you later. I should have known you'd know about the falls. T has my SD card right now and I'm supposed to be working so I'll upload another photo later on today. It's about the lettering carved into the ledge.

We went there on our honeymoon! I wasn't quite a daring back then and wouldn't try it.

I wouldn't recommend sliding and honeymoon on the same trip!

I agree. That wasn't the ride we were going on.

(you started it so I'm not in trouble, right? )

My dog decided to jump into that slide and had the ride of her life. She was (she's since died) a German Shepard and fearless. She went under and it scared me to death, but she popped right back up...I wouldn't let her do it again, but I know she wanted to.
The water was freezing!

I hate cold water but this looks like enough fun to freeze for a few minutes!

Does anyone know the story behind this? Taylor took this pic, I didn't see this myself. It's at the top of the falls. The word SCHOOLS is also carved into the ledge.
