Last Saturday night was the 11th annual Black Fly Ball. It is held at the historic Machias Valley Grange & Cultural Center at the height of Eastern Maine's Wild Blueberry harvest. It is an impressive event. The ladies wear gowns and logging boots. The gents wear jeans and clamming boots. It is justifiable described as "awesome". It's a family event. Young kids go because the kids who might have been hired as baby sitters are at the ball too.
The Black Fly Ball is held in part to honor and commemorate the "Black Fly, Defender of the Maine Woods". Bumper stickers are available.
