My family are going to be coming from White Mountain National Forest, and we was wondering where a nice place to visit maine and maybe stay a few nights before traveling towards Moosehead and then down south to Bangor. I was thinking Bethel, but does anyone have a must see/stay for a couple of days in Northwest/midwest Maine?

As you can see by the number of responses, and the number of reads, there must not be a "must" see or stay. Maine is such a beautiful, diverse state, that all if it (in my opinion) is a must see. I'm sure you will enjoy just about anywhere you stop.

Bethel is nice. Not a lot to see in the summer. It's claim to fame being Sunday River Ski Resort. Route 2 is ok though 302 into Fryeburg is the roughest road I've been on in quite some time. I suggest Route 2 to Bethel. It's not all that far to the Moosehead region from Bethel up Route 16 to Bingham then on to Abbot Village. If your goal is Moosehead anyway I'd just head to Greenville.

My husband and I are from rural Nebraska. We have always wanted to visit Maine. Five years ago we took our trip. We spent time in Wells, Camden, Bar Harbor, Bangor, and Portsmouth (even a couple days in Nova Scotia. One word: WOW!

I second the suggestion of Route 2 into Bethel. Depending on where you're staying in the White Mountains (I'm assuming North Conway?), it means you take Route 16 up to Gorham (NH) and Route 2 East from there. Route 2 from Gorham to Bethel is quite scenic as is Route 16 from N.Conway to Gorham. You'll pass through Pinkham Notch and the base of Mt. Washington (the tallest peak in the Whites). I suggest either a trip up the Mt. Washington Auto Road (or a hike) and a stop at nearby Wildcat Mountain to ride the Ziprider if it's open. Bethel, like most of the towns in Maine, is a charming little village (My family has a vacation home there). There are some shops and a few restaurants (I suggest the Sudbury Inn if you're going to eat) in the little Main St. area worth checking out. The Bethel Inn is nice too. It's a bit quiet in the summer but there are things to do. You can do a nice canoe ride (there are guides in town) down the Androscoggin River or go out on a guided ATV trail ride. Both of those things are a lot of fun.

Yes, on Rt.#26 there is Step Falls at Wright Brook, Table Rock, Baldpate, Screwauger Falls, Dunn Falls on the East B Hill Rd., and the Appalachian Trail runs through the area with many wonderful vistas.

Have you ever trout fished where the Bear River dumps in to the Androscoggin?
