Local news here in WI said tonite the mill in Jay, Maine is closing down its remaining paper machine with 96 employees losing jobs by May 31st. Its transferring work load to mills in Rhinelander and Mosinee, WI. Owner, which is Wausau Papers is based here in Mosinee. I have a few relatives working here at the Mosinee mill and they are getting a little worried.
sad isn't it? East Millinocket's mill is going down for a month again. It's like deja vu of what happened in Millinocket. Wonder how long before it is closed up tight as a drum? Pretty soon we will have all these trees and no use for them here in Maine!
You have to wonder what the investment firms that own the North Woods these days are going to do as the market for pulp wood keeps declining. When the mill owners and the forest owners were the same people, they could just let the trees grow for a while in economic downturns. Investment companies expect regular returns, though.
I won't be surprised to see a lot more vacation home development proposals in the North Woods in the coming years.

Development is a good thing. I just do not see the down side up here. Pulp could easily be exported if we would just develop a few good ports on the coast.
I recently heard as well that further up in Northern Maine, Island Falls to be exact, the starch factory is closing. I know a couple of people who have over 20 years there. This is going to severely impact that area as there isn't much work there at all. Very sad.
