lets not overlook, the maine ...woman,,, a good maine woman can dig her own clams, gut her own deer, plant and tend to the garden, can the veggies, and still look good to take for a church supper
Good heavens Lived there my whole life and I can't (won't) do any of those things and none of my friends do either. We do, however, know where all the best shopping is and will get up at 4:30 to spend a weekend shopping in Boston.
As for what draws DH & I to Maine? Pretty much everything

FNolan - I hope the mid to lower 60s appeals to you because that is mostly what we have had for the past few weeks. A day in the 70s now and then and there was one day in April that hit 90 and one day in May - 90. This doesn't happen every spring but often enough to discourage some who think Maine will be utopia. I grew up in MA but have lived here in Maine all my adult life. I do love it - even with putting up with long winters - many of which are very cold with lots of snow. It is nice to visit other places but nothing compares to being home in Maine. Compared to many places with long hot summers, we can at least enjoy the outdoors and not have to stay inside til 4 or 5 in the afternoon, which I know many do in Florida. I hope you like it here when you are a full time resident. Try checking out some inland places of much beauty, such as Rangeley Lakes area. It is especially beautiful in late September. Moosehead Lake is another place I love.
I grewup in Central NY which has weather similar to Maine, just slightly warmer, so I wouldn't mind Maines cool sumers and bitter cold winters. I love the cold, HATE the heat. Here I hibernate in the summer because it's just too danged hot to do anything, I hibernate in the winter because everything is closed and there's nothing to do. It barely makes it below freezing here so I don't understand why there are very few things going on in the winter. Back in NY we had out door chilie cook offs in the dead of winter. Here, if it's not in the 70s or hotter there's little to do even tho it's a major metropolitan area. Go figure. Weather forcast the next week - Highs 90-98 Lows 75-80.Too Danged HOT ! I can't wait to get to northern Maine and enjoy the outdoors again like I did in NY when I was young
Nothing like a baked bean supper at one of the local halls or churches. Been a hallmark here for generations. It seems there is a lot less of them in the last 15 or 20 years, but there still around.
After being in Florida for the last 2 days...I miss being home and being able to talk to strangers and have them be friendly. When we are at stores here if we happen to walk up behind/beside someone to try and look at what they are looking at, we get dirty looks like "how dare you try to look at this while I'm looking at it." You smile at someone in the grocery store and they don't smile back. I don't miss all the rain you guys are having right now though
