Hello,

I've been searching for my own little piece of Maine for a while now and I believe I may have found it in Lincoln; a small waterfront lot on Egg Pond, where I'd like to build a home. I have concerns about odor from the paper mill though. The times I have visited Lincoln, I never smelled that sulfurous smell, however a friend recently made reference to an old Lincoln nickname, "Stinkin' Lincoln."

I'm hoping someone from the area would shed some light on my concerns... Does the paper mill stink?

Not nearly as much as they did years ago, though there are days when we know we've reached town by the odor. We're in Webster Plt. just a ways out from Lincoln. We do all of our business there. We moved here in June and we are quite happy. The Lincoln area is a great place to be.

We bought a house right outside of Lincoln last year and the kids will go to Lincoln schools. Most times we are in Lincoln we don't smell it at all. Every once in a while depending on which way the wind is blowing, we may smell it faintly whatever direction from the mill the wind is carrying the scent. I absolutely fell in love with the Lincoln area when I first came there and we are very happy with our choice to make it our home.

We went "into town" (Lincoln) this morning. We drove past Egg Pond Road. Seems to me it's far enough out of town you shouldn't get any paper mill smells there at all.

The smell is not the issue it used to be. Once in a while on a damp day with low clouds we are reminded of what the mill used to be like 20m years ago, but it is never as abad as it was back then. The Lincoln mill is the only privately owned, totally chlorine free, fully integrated paper mill in the world. "Fully intergrated" is a manufacturing term meaning they take wood chips and make a finished product.

Welcome to Lincoln, Maine!

We like Lincoln. We'll be going over in the morning for an orthodontist appointment. We'll have lunch some where and get groceries before we drive the 50 miles back. It has a nice small town feeling.

I hope the folks who have posted are correct............and it is better than it used to be. You should find out FOR CERTAIN, because I can remember in the 80s and 90s, when I used to visit LIncoln now and then, that on some days it was UNBEARABLE. My friend said that 80% of the time, it was just bad. But on the other days, it rose to a whole new dimension for some reason. You could not go outside on those days. Now, maybe you live in the right direction, so the mill odors wouldn't come your way. But you might need to come into town, etc.
If they have reduced that AWFUL smell, that would be a very good thing for Lincoln.

I worked in the mill in the 1980s. The buildings look the same from a mile away, but the process is very different from what it was a generation ago.

I live in the area. I'm here every day.
