I agree with you that it is subjective. But I actually saw a map once that was color coded and that rated geographical areas according to the risk of death due to weather.. that would be decent unbiased approach at looking at weather..

Yep. Definetely subjective, but also subject to experience. We have lots of experience with snow, so therefore, we can deal well with it - we've found the right way to by experience. Stick us in hurricane alley, and we probably wouldn't fare quite as well.

"Weather-related deaths" is one of my DH's biggest pet peeve phrases when he watches the news. He is of the thought that it was not the "weather" that caused deaths, rather, the lack of preparedness, and in some cases, the actions of those who are involved (for example, driving in the middle of a blizzard only to get stuck and freeze, or in southern climates, not going to emergency shelters when told to do so).

In the latter case, personally, I'd rather shovel snow off my driveway than have to shovel my house off the lot.

I think a little common sense can go a long way. Obviously, events that have little or no warning (like earthquakes) don't apply, but really, if someone has some forewarning, a lot can be done to prevent injury and death IMHO.

Yahoo thinks VT NH and Maine are in another country. When was the last time you saw any news on the tv for any of these 3 states, unless you happen to live in one of them?

The power goes out in NH all the time and nothing happens. We deal with it.

Driving in snow when something happens, all we do is say, Here hold the beer, and watch this!

Ya know, I get the same feeling about Wisconsin when I'm watching a major TV network doing national weather. It seems they'll skip around Wis and talk about Michigan, Minneapolis, Chicago, even the Dakotas, but never up where I am. We just get no respect.

Almost like when I take my '59 Plymouth to a car show. It seems spectators are oohing and awwing about '57 chevys and fords, but that's another story

Our Philadelphia news stations were talking about Maine ALL day yesterday! As we got slammed with our 2nd blizzard in 5 days plus had one in Dec... so our 3rd blizzard this year..... beating the all time snow per season record thats on record.... bringing us to over 70 inches of snow this season so far.... WITH more snow coming in Monday.... so all day yesterday they kept comparing this to Maine saying we are both having backwards winters this year. We've had more snow this week then the past 5-6 years I think it was....
