Just curious
It's Friday the 29th for our city - other area cities are also scheduled for the 28th, and 30th, but none on Halloween Day. I though maybe because there is school the next day (Nov. 1) but nope, the kids are off the 1st and 2nd.

Schools are not closed in Howard County on November 1st - they are only closed on the 2nd for Election Day (because many of the voting locations are at the schools themselves). I would venture to say that there would be more activity on a Friday and Saturday for kids and for people giving candy out than on Sunday when many people have to work the next morning.

Typically if Halloween were to fall on a weekday then trick or treating would be that very night. Sometimes you get a similar situation with July 4th fireworks, depending on which day it falls on.

We have a similar setup in Harrisburg PA area where it's generally the Thursday before Oct 31. When I ask locals why they usually say "if it were Friday it would conflict with football" - but why it's even on a designated day is strange to me since where I grew up (central NY) there was none of this designated day business.

I wouldn't say it's 'common not to have trick or treating on Halloween' Who says it's not. Just because fewer people may be doing it in a given area doesn't mean it's 'not common.' Blanket statements like the opening really jump to conclusions.

My paper posted about 6 cities and towns about 20 or so miles around, a couple in PA, one in VA and the rest in MD - all with days other then the 31st for Halloween. If it makes you feel better, I will rephrase my question - Why is it not uncommon for Halloween not to be on Halloween

So adults can have parties on the 31st. Sometimes Halloween events are tied into other events run by groups or businesses.

We had trick or treat on ... halloween in Ellicott City, when it's supposed to be. I find it intrusive that cities tell citizens when to trick or treat when it should be on the 31st. C'mon liberterians, take up this cause!

I live in Baltimore County. I have never heard of anyone trick or treating any other day but the 31st in this area regardless of what day of the week it falls on. I had a ton of trick or treaters on the 31st. And if anyone had decided to come on any other day, I would have politely but firmly turned them away empty handed.
