I took this from the Maryland Motor Vehicle Association's web site, but I want to make sure I am reading this right! Does this mean I have to pay 6% on the purchase price of my car that is almost 10 years old? Meaning, what I paid for it when I bought it? What is "recently purchased"? I bought my car 3 years ago.

Maryland Excise Titling Tax

If the vehicle has been recently purchased, the 6% excise tax is based on the greater of the total purchase price verified by a notarized MVA Bill of Sale (form VR-181), signed by both the buyer(s) and the seller(s) in which the actual price paid for the vehicle is stated or $640.

For a vehicle over 7 years old:
  • Tax is based on the greater of the purchase price or the minimum of $640. The MVA may require you to submit additional documentation to substantiate the purchase price.

That's not recently purchased...I think you fall into the second category.

Sorry, I suppose that's obvious. I was just shocked. Do you happen to know what I would be required to pay? and if there would be any military exemption from that, if so?

I moved to MD from OH a few years ago, and my car was less than 7 years old, and still had a lien on it. I ended up paying $100 tax on it, I think because the tax in OH was around 8% where I bought it, which was less then MD's tax rate at the time.

This is from the MD DMV Website: "Vehicle(s) titled in a state with a tax rate equal to or higher than Maryland's 6% tax rate will cost $100."

I also didn't change my license or registration for maybe 9 months...no fees, etc, I just didn't volunteer I was past the 60 days. No one asked.

Thanks for the info firefightermom. I bought the car in California, so that should cover the taxes to make it only $100... but am currently registered in TN and it will be good until Feb 2010. I suppose I will go your route.

Here is the website. Basically to register your car in MD, you have to pay a sales tax amount, unless where you bought the car had a higher rate than MD.

I didn't pay any sales tax when my wife (then fiancee) brought her car to MD from AZ in 2007. It was 10 years old at the time. They told me that since the sales tax was higher in AZ that I didn't owe. The lady may have screwed up, i don't really know because she also listed the car as less than 3700lbs. when its really supposed to be over 3700 resulting in a savings in the registration. (I think $128 for 2 years instead of $180)
