I am looking into relocating myself + 3 young kids to the Ellicott City area from New York. I have looked into the school system and love the grades of Burleigh Manor Middle School. My oldest is an excellent student and she has visited their website and is also looking forward to going there. Originally was going to buy a house but it was suggested that I rent first to investigate the best neighborhood to actually buy. I have looked at some apartments in the 21042 zip, but got my hopes burst when I realized that I would need a job before I could even apply. Is there anywhere to rent there where you don't have to have a job. I have money to pay rent, but it seems I need a present employer or prospect. In NY some people rent part of their houses if there is a 2 family residence. Is there anything available there so I can at least tell my kids we have somewhere to live so I can register them for school? I need help.

Seems kind of silly to rent, if you can afford to buy. I think as long as you research the area before you buy, you should be fine. It might be difficult finding a place to rent in the same school district that you want to buy in, and Howard County is pretty strict about where a child goes to school- you have to have a deed or rental agreement to even enroll in school- plus a utility bill with that address on it. Most of the 21042 zip code is great- as well as 21043. I would suggest calling an area realtor and telling them exactly what you want, they'd be able to give you the best info.
