It's Gnats where I'am as well. Mosquitoes, Gnats, and Wasps are the most common problem in this state because of the heat and very humid weather during the summer.

over the weekend, i learned what the OP is talking about re: gnats after going camping in allegany county. the weird thing was that despite swarming around and getting in my ears/eyes/nose, they didn't seem to be very interested in actually biting, in marked contrast to the ones i'm familiar with in the western USA.

The swarming gnats we have around here aren't normally the biting kind, they are more interested in drinking your delicious salty sweat (yum!) Deer flies and horse flies are all around and do bite, but don't swarm in great numbers.

I am glad to report that the "Spray a hat with bug spray" advice WORKS!

Keeps them from swarming around your face

and keeps you from having the stuff on your skin

hafta try the Listerine solution next

interesting, i thought all gnats were biters.

as annoying as the gnats i encountered over the weekend were, i prefer them to the mosquitos back in bowie that will practically drain you dry.

The gnats are here to stay until the snow flies. PA has a gnat program to control them, MD will NOT! BT is a natural way to control them. We are in western MD and we leave the state to go camping, since MD won't do anything about the gnats!!!

I haven't noticed many gnats, but then again I don't go out much during the dawn or dusk. Also explains why I've only gotten a few skeeter bites so far this summer.

Interesting......what is BT and how is it used by PA to control gnats?
