Silver Spring comes to mind since it's just off I-95 and the beltway. You can easily take the metro into DC.

Jin,

I assume you'll be taking a train back and forth to NYC from DC?

Just something else to consider...

Amtrak's Acela Express is far and away the best train to take to NYC. It makes many fewer stops and is much more comfortable.

The Acela Express runs from Union Station in DC and BWI Aiport. If you take a regional train to NY (more stops, less comfortable, less expensive), you can pick up that train in New Carrollton, MD (as well as the others).

That's just something to consider since you'll be making weekly excursions to train stations.

I definitely agree that anywhere in the DC area is convenient as long as it's near the Metro. I've done that trip a lot. You can take the Metro into Union Station and then take the Acela Express to NYC. The Express is more money, but saves you tons of time, and is a much nicer and more comfortable ride. Total time should be under 4 hours between metro and amtrak.
