Live in Elkton, MD/attend UD in Newark DE? (housing, rent)

Hi,

Is it feasible to leave in Elkton MD while attending UD in Newark? Google maps says it's a 13-minute drive. Also, is housing actually reasonable there...as it appears to be on the internet?

I am a U of D graduate and commuting is very easy and convenient. I like living here and using all the services of the Newark area as well as the tax free shopping in Delaware. We are more rural and not as intense as Newark, but keep in mind if the University knows you live here you will definitely pay out of state tuition which is a significant factor in people "sneaking" over the border and using a friend or relative's address to obtain instate tuition. Our police do regular sweeps looking for out of staters who work in DE and pretend to live in DE so they don't have to pay dual taxes. Generally these folks live here and don't change their car registrations for as long as they can. DE does not have tax reciprocity with MD and this is also a point of contention. I know it was tough in the beginning , but we do like living here and put several children through the education system. We have indeed enjoyed the benefits of living near a good school like U of D and have attended severel events there. Cecil Community College has many basic college prerequisities and has improved tremendously over the years as well as developing partnerships with 4 year schools. Best of luck.

it is feasible to live in elkton and attend U of D Just be sure of your time and come visit before you rent anywhere. I personally recomend you try to get a house with some other college students. if you drive through newark now there are many houses for rent. most of the time spliting the cost with four or five people and then there is no need for commuting issues.

I wouldnt suggest moving to elkton if you're going to UofD because of the out of state charges for school. You're not going to get that much of a break in rent vs. what you pay for out of state tuition. Also you'll have to live in Delaware for like 2 years before you get instate tuition.

Not to mention main street newark is just awesome.

Thanks everyone - I wasn't thinking about the out-of-state issue! Also, I'm an 'old' student, so living with others isn't an option for me - would be better for the finances though, that's for certain!!
