Hi, I live in Seattle and am planning on moving somewhere in New England. I work for a Kroger owned grocery store here in Seattle. I am in the union and make pretty good money for a cashier. ($19). I’m not sure where to go in New England, but wherever I go I want to transfer to another Kroger owned store that also has a union, so that I can keep my pay and seniority. Has anyone worked in any of the Kroger owned stores anywhere there? I’m just starting out and don’t plan on moving for a few years at least.

What union are you in? Our local Stop and Shops are union stores.

I've never seen a Kroger store in New England, NY, or NJ.

Not only Stop & Shop, but some Shaw's stores are too.

Neither Kroger nor Safeway is in New England nor, I believe, in NY. I was told the reason is because we're geographically isolated from all their other stores, and it wouldn't make fiscal sense for them to set up distribution and such for such a "small" area.

As the other poster mentioned, Stop and Shop and some Shaw's are unionized.

Most large chain grocery stores have difficulty expanding in the area because they can't compete on price with Demoulas'. I'd hate to see how much a loaf of bread costs in a store that pays their cashiers $19 an hour.....

I think the shaws union was mostly in the warehouse..basically faded. stop and shop still exists though.

Competition for food is so high that I doubt the unions here would have strength. There's walmart, sam's Club, whole foods, trader joes, costco, bj's, roche bros...even drug stores sell more food now.

It's not like it's just two big chains anymore.

I can't see any retailer union or non union paying that amount. Self checkout is a way of life and stop and shop has scanners to scan as you shop. Cashiers aren't nearly as needed.
