Moving from Kansas. I have a tentative job in Concord, MA. Civilian working in base. Am finding that advertised rental homes are Uber-Expensive.($1800 and up) Where could I find lower rental rates, an affordable 3-4 BR home, safe neighborhood, good schools with Afterschool programs. that would keep teenage girls out of mischief. And not a far commute.20 minutes. 30 maximum. Thanks.

Sadly here $1800 for a 3BR home is Uber-cheap. There is lots of rental property in Acton which has good schools, I cannot speak to the after-school programs. These will be apartments or townhomes however, not single familiy homes.

Welcome to Boston!

$1800 is uber cheap in Boston.

A friend was looking for similar accommodations and found a great two family house in Acton. Similar houses exist--but are far more likely to be found--in Concord, Belmont, Sudbury and Lexington.

At least the schools your children will attend will be one of the best in the state, right? :-)

It does not need to be Boston. I know big town big money. We are not in Kansas anymore. Safe/Affordable/Decent schools. Any town, with a relatively decent commute to Concord will be OK. I am open to suggestions.

How about Milton and Maynard? I've heard good things about both.

How much do you want to spend in housing? You have to realize housing costs are significantly higher in just about every area within 1 hour of Boston and Concord.

I would prefer no more than $1600. B/c I know I would have to factor in another $300-400 for utilities. Total monthly housing budget is around 2K

Milton and Maynard may be good bets. Maynard is closer.

From Milton it would be kind of a long commute to Concord.

Maynard's schools may be tough to call because they seem to be up-and-coming, and it's only after they've come up as far as they're going to that we'll see how far that is. Maynard has a long history as mostly a blue-collar town. The town is more densely built, with more of a downtown, than many of the surrounding towns, which have a fairly rural feel. Because of the density and the downtown, in recent years Maynard has been attracting some affluent ex-yuppies who have started families and moved to the suburbs, but still want a hint of the city around them. It may be the influx of this group that has led to a push for better schools, and as I understand it, a new high school is being built. Maynard's schools aren't super-good now, but are likely to become at least solid in the foreseeable future.

It's going to be tough to find a detached house for rent on your budget, but I'd suggest checking Littleton and Chelmsford, for a couple of more towns fairly close to Concord, which, like Acton, are nice towns but have housing costs somewhat lower than you find in a lot of towns in the area.
