Hi -

I used to work for DOJ and went through a background check. It was just a basic clearance.

While it was no big deal, it took SIX WEEKS for them to complete it, which was a MAJOR hassle!!!

PM me if you have any questions. Not sure I can help you, b/c I wasn't really involved in it. To this day I'm not even sure who all they talked to.

Hello:

It will depend on the type of background...

Is it for a clearance with DOD (Secret or TS ??) - can take 3 mos to a year (depends)
Is it an access ... these are more restrictive... - can take 6 mos to 2 yrs, (depends)

Both use the FBI for the background checks ... what form did you complete (SF86) and how far back did they want information for. That will tell me more on what they are looking for.

I have both and I work in Security so I'm aware of what the criteria is and what they are looking for. If you want to ask specific questions or want further information please PM me and I will assist you where I can.

I had a basic security clearance. If you're working in a nuke facility it's possible you may have a special clearance, which is more ultra-secret. I don't know whether the procedure is more complicated than the one I went through. For the basic clearance, I just filled out a form. Something that hasn't been mentioned here is that you'll also need to submit a set of fingerprints. You can do this at your local police department and submit them with the form. Again, this was how it was done for the basic kind of clearance. It was also pre-9/11. I don't know whether post-9/11, or for a more restrictive clearance, they would have a procedure that would ensure the fingerprints they receive are really yours. Be aware, though, that you will be submitting fingerprints.
