commute into Cambridge isn't the best. it all depends on where in Cambridge you are going and how you plan on getting there (car vs T). if it's the T you can bus or train out of oak Grove (malden/Melrose border) into sullivan and switch to a bus or if you are going to Biogen etc you can stay on and take a shuttle from North station.

the schools are okay....not considered top tier or (Lexington etc.) even the one below (reading etc).

The commute to Cambridge is actually pretty good - especially to Kendall Square, where the drive is about 30-40 minutes during rush hour. You don't have to get on the highway to get to Cambridge from Melrose. You can also take the orange line from Oak Grove to the red line, or take the commuter rail (there are 3 stops in Melrose) to North Station and take either the green line to Lechmere (or downtown if you are headed that way), the orange line to red line, or the EZ Ride shuttle into Cambridge. By train, either way, door to door is usually less than an hour. Melrose is also about 8-10 miles away from Cambridge and I know plenty of people who bike to work.

As for the schools, they were pretty widely discussed in this thread. They are not Lexington level but they are good and getting better as the town is gentrifying. http://www.city-data.com/forum/massa...-district.html

Melrose is a great town with a beautiful, walkable downtown - a nice mix of urban and suburban. Many parks and playgrounds. A great community for families with young kids. On the downside, the houses are old - it was one of the first "commuter" towns into Boston so it has many houses that were built in the early 1900s and the lots are smaller. If you are looking for new construction and a big yard, Melrose is not the town to look in!

I live in Melrose and commute to Kendall Square. It's about 9 miles door-to-door, but can take 45 mins to an hour on bad days. There's a lot of construction and traffic, but it's doable. Use GPS app with traffic (WAZE is great) and there are probably 12 different ways you can get in.

Melrose was just ranked #1 hotest zip code in the country. There's a reason for that, the place is awesome for many different reasons: https://homes.yahoo.com/blogs/spaces...amp;soc_trk=ma

Yes, Melrose is the hottest zip code in the country. It even beat out Arlington!

But that doesn't mean that it's better than fancy suburbs. It's just more affordable and that's why it's HOT. It's not such a bad place and it's getting better.

Even when I was house searching 3 years ago, thought the prices were pretty steep. Same with Wakefield.
