Hello everyone! So, I am looking for advice for housing in the Dedham area. I was just hired by General Dynamics, and I'm trying to find a good cost to commute ratio. I'll be working in Dedham as apposed to Boston, so I hope that opens some cheaper options for me. What is the commute like surrounding the area? I was looking closer to the Taunton or Pawtucket areas since they're less expensive, but how would the commute be?

All comes down to when you go to work. Taunton or Pawtucket put you on the 95 and 24 stretches which isn't where you want to be unless it's during pre commute hours. Like GeePee said the Norwood, Walpole, Wrentham, Foxboro give you many ways in and you can start jumping 1,1A,95 if really need be if stuff starts getting stupid. Have you looking in Dedham? There's usually some affordable stuff there. If your going in early and wanted to money saving to overcome your time spend Taunton would probably work, but thats assuming your doing the commute pre-rush if not the time spend sitting in traffic will wipe out your saving and sanity.

I'm trying to get my commute under an hour if possible. I'm coming from the Hampton Roads Virginia area, and down here it takes an hour sometimes to go 5 miles right outside of base. Is it that bad in the Boston area?

I second Walpole - all sorts of back roads to Dedham will allow you to circumvent traffic once you gets the lay of the land.

Norwood, the prices of apartments are much lower than Dedham and more availability. Your commute to work would be much better than many of the towns mentioned.
