A family of 5 living on $100K is not going to be living "the good life" in the greater Boston area.

We have older boys and we are very sure our HHI will be well over 110,000 a year . The 96k is what we make currently and does very well where are at now.
We will not have day care issues as our youngest is 13.
Thanks everyone all your help is very appreciated. If we have to pay more for rent that will be fine as I believe you get what you pay for. I know the cost of living is higher there and I'm sure we will adjust just fine. If we can survive nicely in Washington D.C, which is very expensive cost of living I'm sure we will be ok lol

Both working and no day care you could do well in the greater Boston area.

Yeah, if you can do ok in DC and be happy on what you earn, you'll make it here. Good luck.

Hull.
Very gay friendly and a boat ride away from the city. I'm not up to speed on the quality of the schools.

Hull is great! Very friendly and welcoming to all, great schools, wonderful sense of place and community. We have lived here 15+ years, 2 kids in the schools, very happy here. There is an active local LGBTQ organization Hull Pride that organizes a lot of events, I'm sure you can find out more online.

That said, I would not want to drive to/from Boston regularly from here, as OP indicated wanting to do. If you can take the ferry or train to your job, though, you are all set.

You may be able to rent 3 bed house is Andover for $2500. The schools are considered very good. it is a very engaged community, parents are very involved with education and sports, coaching. i don't believe being gay is a problem. Many people work in Boston and commute from Andover. There are two suburban train stations that go into North Station. There is also a bus that goes into Boston. There are apartments near one of these train stations, walking distance, with a Whole Foods nearby, as well as other shopping. I would say it is a pretty progressive community. There is a community Facebook page for Andover which can give you an idea of the tone of conversations, concerns, and happenings. I am not sure if you have to be member to read it.

It sounds like you're affirmatively looking to move - -that is, you are not happy with where you are now in DC and want to go elsewhere. What is it you would like to change - that is, what is it that you don't like about where you are now (are you in the city itself or in MD or VA?) Or are you looking for something similar to where you are now, but for some reason need to leave the area?

It sounds like your wife will commute into Boston itself. Is there any possibility you will need to commute to Boston also? Or is there a possibility you might get a job where you need to commute to some suburb (and if so, any guesses as to where it might be, based on your profession?)

Do you like proximity to the city and prefer urban feeling areas or is the proximity to Boston wanted only because of the commute?

Arlington, Acton, Natick, Newton and if able to increase budget Lexington are towns you'd feel very welcome in.

None of those places are really possible on their budget and income IMO.
