I commute 55-70 min a day, even though I could get a place about 25-30 min away from work, for less. Why? Where I would be living. Haverhill and Lowell have some stuff going on, both are up and coming.

Where could they live near Burlington for slightly more to cut the commute that makes sense? If they could get a place in Medford for a bit more, sure, that might make sense, but they want to spend less than 1200... so I'm not sure how feasible that is. Haverill would do both, cut rent a bit, and save time on commute.

Hallmark Gardens on Terrace Hall Ave or all the way up at Seven Springs?

Lord Baron is:
Studio - $1200
1 BR - $1425
2 BR - $1625

Hallmark Gardens
1 BR - $1550

Seems to have a stigma all these years (from industrial water pollution, I think, many years ago). I like their town center and nice library, plus it's next to desirable Winchester.

They do have some apartment communities there.

Plus there's a large pond, I think.

Maybe Wakefield and Waltham are also good choices for you, though a bit farther to Burlington.
Thanks for giving Woburn some props. We've been here for several months now, albeit not in a rental, and do think it's a decent town. Location can't be beat.

Downtown Woburn seems to have vastly improved. I really liked Pinxto Picho Tapas (been several times now), and I know the Baldwin Bar has been getting a fair amount of attention for its cocktails.

Haverhill to Burlington as your daily commute? Are you insane? Why would someone with no ties to Haverhill pick that?

That's not a bad commute. The why is because Haverhill is relatively affordable (remember, the OP is trying to cut rent) and there is some culture going on in Haverhill.

Lowell is more expensive.

There aren't a lot of other options where someone can live, where there is a scene (OP sounds like a single person), that a person can rent for under $1200.

Heritage at Bedford Springs right on Middlesex Tpk back in 2008. Just checked and seems the rent as gone up exponentially there.

You might be able to get into Lord Baron Apartments in Burlington for $1200 but it's a studio and that complex has always had a bit of a stigma attached to it here in town.
Lawd noooooooooooooooooooo!

Lowell is more expensive yes. But it's not that much more expensive. It's definitely better to live 40 mins closer to work for only a couple of hundred more a month.

Acutally Nashua might be easier then Haverhill for the OP (commute wise).
