Seems that quite a few of these places started out as junior colleges for women=two year colleges. Last time I heard of some of them, they had names like Green Mountain Junior College. I know Baypath in Longmeadow was BayPath Junior College--a business school for women. Maybe they overextended themselves, expanding when they didn't have the money behind them. Times have changed. And then times changed again.

There are exceptions like Dean (an example of possibly the most successful example of this transformation). But Pine Manor! I forgot they were even in existence!

There is a need for a College where a simple BS/A is easily obtainable as such is needed for most entry level positions, then let life/work/further education lead you where it will.

When it comes down to it even if tuition is low the graduation rates at some of these also are low. If you can't graduate your students where is the alumni that would fund an endowment?

Four year graduation at Hampshire is 47% five years is 59% nearly a third don't make it to sophomore year.

What do you base doing well on? Have you seen a growing endowment? Better graduation rates? Increased number of students? I just highlighted a list that are small schools, small endowments and not a specific niche.
