Hi, I am looking to buy and reading mixed opinions on the area, is Salem a safe town?
What neighborhoods should I consider/avoid?
Couple, no kids, schools are not important.

Thank you

I think mixed is right. Crime stats are right in City Data, by the way. If you compare it to a city, then it's a bit better than average, and clearly better than Boston. If you compare it to a middle class town, or especially an upper middle class town, then it's clearly less safe. The glass is half full and it's half empty.

Personally, I think it's safe. Has a lively downtown area (especially during fall) and many of the outer neighborhoods are just typical Metro Boston. Reminds me of a Braintree/Weymouth. Meaning that if you don't have kids, you're going to be fine.

The Point is a predominately minority section of Salem so I tend to be skeptical of people singling out those kinds of areas. That being said, The Point is like if you plopped down a bad part of Brockton into Salem. Took a random right onto Palmer and I was fairly surprised.

It’s a fairly big tourist economy, plus the nightlife and the Halloween season probably skewing the stats. I would imagine a majority of the crime is downtown petty property crime, drunk and disorderlies, break ins etc. I have never felt unsafe there.

Wife and I go there frequently. We frequent the touristy areas and have always felt safe.

Occasionally a violent event shows up on my FB newsfeed such as this:

I hear Halloween is not kid friendly.

Yep, it's not that nothing happens there. I did a quick couple of google searches for shootings and home invasions in Salem, using a date restriction of 1 year. There is definitely some activity there, and more than just assaults, a couple of sample hits below. Now, having said that, the same is true of most American cities. It all depends on what you're comparing it to.
