Doesn't matter much as MA is so very low, as is all of the region.

MD is considered Southeast by the US Census, and therefore in many of these regional comparisons as well.

I just clicked around a Google search. US News (2019 data) is saying Massachusetts is #1 for lowest property crime. #24 for violent crime which they called "low". In their "safest states" list using their metrics, Massachusetts was #8.

Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont are #1, #2, and #4 for violent crime. Of course, that's because they call them "hunting accidents".

It's interesting that in their list, Massachusetts was the only New England state not in the top-10 for least violent crime.

Let's see...Maine last had a hunting fatality in 2019. Prior to that, I think the average was around a whopping 0.5 a year killed. I'm sure that's just roasting their stats...

How many people have been shot in Boston this year, "intended" or "accidentally"?

There are lots of angry, disturbed and trigger happy people here. Just watch the news any day of the week to hear all about them.

The USGS doesn't include it in the Southeast. I'll take the agency that knows geology and geography. It's Northeast.

https://www.usgs.gov/geology-and-eco...arks/northeast

The Census is full of it. They don't even show up to my Wisconsin home and no one that I know even received mailers in 2020 or 2010.

A lot of hunting accidents are just that. People falling out of tree stands is the number one cause. People crossing a fence or wall improperly with a loaded rifle or shotgun. There are some accidental shootings, especially in spring turkey season. It's a stretch to call them violent crime.

Lawrence is #1...lol. Here's the next 10. It's as you would expect - Lawrence, Lowell, Fitchburg. The data is all crime, not just violent crime. That must be why Teterboro was so high for NJ and the Cape towns are relatively high on this list.

11. 2,296 Lawrence, MA / 77,364
12. 2,221 West Springfield, MA / 27,899
13. 2,189 Lowell, MA / 108,491
14. 2,067 Provincetown, MA / 2,777
15. 1,998 Wareham, MA
16. 1,961 Greenfield, MA / 13,128
17. 1,935 Pittsfield, MA / 44,226
18. 1,929 Barnstable, MA / 47,821
19. 1,911 Dennis, MA / 2,431
20. 1,893 Fitchburg, MA / 40,419

No. Again, it is because only 56 people live in Teterboro, NJ. One or two crimes there will result in very high numbers. That town shouldn't even be included.

A single crime in Teterboro would have a rate of 1786 per 100k, which is an astronomical rate - it would be the 5th most violent city in the country.
Two crimes? If there was a fight between two of the residents and they were both charged with assault? A rate of 3571 would be the worst place in the country by far!

The most violent place in 2019 was St Louis with a violent crime rate of 2082.

If the rate is total crime (violent + property), 5 instances of vandalism would make it the worst place in the country. 5 crimes would make the rate 8929. ABQ was the most crime ridden place in 2019 with a rate of 8734.
