I really struggled yesterday, including wheezing until I caved and put on a mask at home, and my eyes and throat were burning in my office in Boston today. I can't imagine how it must feel with it so much worse in NYC.

I lived in southern California for many years, where heavy smoke and particle pollution from wildfires was an almost annual event depending on wind direction. Long before Covid put N95 masks in the headlines and turned them into political debates, many people (including me) used N95 masks during wildfire smoke events to filter particle pollution. They would likely help the people in the current smoke-choked areas of the eastern US too.

Yes, the debate over masks during Covid became political, but it should not be the case over their use for blocking smoke inhalation during wildfire smoke. I don't know how effective N95 masks are at blocking disease virus, but their best use is blocking larger particles from things like wildfire smoke.

I was in the city yesterday and didn't notice at all. I walked some distance from my office to a restaurant too.

First time in the office in 3 years!

Your employer hasn't enforced return to office, right? I imagine the office was pretty dead but the restaurant might have been busy?

The office had more activity because there was an event for everyone. The restaurant wasn't particularly busy.

We have an Austin Air HEPA machine in the bedroom we run at night. It’s for mold and pollen but it does equally well with smoke. We had it wheeled out into the living room yesterday.

So far, the northern part of the state is still unaffected, but from the map I am seeing, it looks like most of the state is affected and it won't be long til we'll be there too
