Hi everyone. I am living in RI and have started to telecommute for my job two days per week. I have been wanting to make a move. I checked out Nashville TN but I don't think it would be a good fit for me. I like the Newburyport area and I discovered Amesbury when I was checking out the area. I am starting to look at properties and wanted to know if this is a good area for a fortish year old women who has raised her children. I am very social and like to have fun and like the fact it is close to Boston.
I think Amesbury is a great little town with quite a bit to offer. The downtown area is really starting to blossom, with lots of little shops, etc. The town overall has a slightly more blue-collar vibe than nearly Newburyport, but IMO that just gives it more character. It feels more 'real', less pretentious, especially the last 5-10 years with Newburyport changing into a 'destination town' with multitudes of tourists crowding out the longtime residents.
Location is easy to both 495 and 95, easy access to Boston or points north. Couple of apple orchards/farmer markets right in town, or in next door Merrimack (also a nice place to live, but much less activity). While it's fairly close to Boston, the area also has plenty to offer nearby. The 2 best local music venues are, IMO, The Grog in Newburyport, and Tupelo Hall in Salisbury. There is also a dinner theater in town at Amesbury Playhouse, right on Main Street, and the shows change frequently, every 4 weeks IIRC.
Just remember, as with anywhere else, keep aware of your surroundings, etc. It's a nice town but Mayberry FRD
