I generally agree with you provided the vehicle one is purchasing is what might be considered higher-end or luxury. If it is a low-end, 'econo-box' type vehicle, I don't think the pricing difference between mainland and Hawai'i is that great. The long suffering, Mrs. Rain Monkey's Maserati, which I still refuse to ride in, was much 'cheaper' on the mainland versus what was being offered in Hawai'i.

It mainly had to do with the chip shortage, and corresponding plant shutdowns. Availability is low so wanted to get ahead of the shortages.

When we relocated to Maui a few years back we shipped all of our home goods via shipping container. To cut down on costs we only need a partial container and it was about 9K total - however they have a promotion where if you do a shipping container they will ship your car for free!!!!

For many people like me, my Maui condo could not hold the large-scale furniture that came from my 4-bedroom home in California. I sold or gave away all of it and bought new (and some used) over here. ($9,000 will buy a lot of furniture for a smaller condo. )

Shipping the car was only about $1100. I moved here with two large suitcases and a couple of carry-ons, and I brought too much!

BTW: Way to reanimate a 9-year-old zombie thread!
