What is the best way to get there? Are there shuttles? Taxis?

There are taxis as well as public transportation, however, it you want a car during your visit you should rent upon arrival and drive. It is not far to Lahaina, however, the traffic can be really bad, especially during peak hours. If you do not want to rent a car you can coordinate with your hotel, if you will be staying at one, or use the public transportation system. There are lots of tours available so you can leave the driving to others. If you are staying at a resort, there is plenty to do in the area and nearby Lahaina Town. It really depends on what you want to do once you arrive. There are taxis, but can be expensive.

Your most obvious options are taxis ($80-$100, depending upon traffic), SpeediShuttle (cheaper, but with restrictions), or rental car from the airport.

I live in Lahaina (Ka`anapali area), but I am unfamiliar with the availability of public transportation (e.g., the Maui Bus, etc.) from Kahului airport. The drive is only about 25 miles, but the road is mostly 2-lane @ 45 mph, so the GoogleMaps drive time (sans traffic) is about 45 minutes. (Taxis are metered to time, not distance or zones.)

IF you are staying at one of the large hotels some provide a shuttle service.

Rent a car BEFORE arriving at the airport. You will save money by renting on ahead of time. Try carrentals.com

Thanks for the tips. Yeah, I'd rent a car but my friend already has one... it's just that he can't pick me up at that time. I get in at noon on the first of june. I might look into speedishuttle... or find a local on craigslist who wants to make some cash.

Speedishuttle is great if you are headed into a resort area, not as great if you need to be let out on a side street. As for finding someone via Craigslist -- it's a creative idea, but be advised that people over here are easily distracted from deadlines and pre-set hours. In other words, be prepared to hitchhike with your gear when your Craigslift doesn't show up.

[This is not to -- in any way -- demean whomever you may define as a "local." I think of myself as "local." I don't want the thought police to presume there's any racial, ethnic, or cultural slight intended.]

Best of luck and enjoy your stay.
