I've been to Hana many times, though I live in California. Hana is a great place, but it is very remote and laid back (a good thing!). Despite its distance in miles fromm Wailuku, Kihei, etc., it takes a long time to get there from Hana (usually over 3 hours). The Hana Highway is very narrow, with lots of one-lane bridges, and there can be a lot of tourist traffic. Supplies (groceries, etc.) are somewhat limited in Hana, so travel to Wailuku/Kahuliu can be necessary. I'd move to Hana in a heartbeat if I could, but there are some issues to deal with compared to other locations on Maui.

It's been over 9 years since we lived on Maui so I'm not sure if roads have changed. You can also avoid all the one lane bridges and tourist traffic of Hana Highway by "going to town" in the other direction. You'll come out by the winery in Ulupalakua and then go on through Kula and then on into "town". If you drive this way though, be prepared to have a 4 wheel drive vehicle as the rain can make the road practically impassible otherwise.

Hana is absolutely gorgeous and very laid back. Not much there in the way of restaurants, banks (I believe only 1 branch was there when we lived on Maui), groceries, etc.

Aloha, I live in Hana and it is on the EAST side of the island. A small remote community at the end of a very windy 55 mile drive from the central area of Kahului - 55 miles that takes about 2 hours to drive because of the narrow, windy road. It is amazingly beautiful with a rich cultural history and a very close nit community. There is a great pre-school for children - actually 2 preschools as well as some private "sitting" services. If you would like to chat about this I would be glad to answer questions for you. What will determine whether or not you take the job at Hana Health? I actually worked at the medical center a while ago so would be glad to share with you about that also. I am also a real estate agent specializing in property management. I rent to Hana Health frequently. Let me know if I can help in any way. Alaula
