Hello. Not too sure what you mean by "local style hiking spots" but here are a few places that are pretty good.

Haleakala National Park - Nice waterfall area - Crater hike is pretty nice too
Waikamoi Cloud Forest - also in Haleakala Ntl. Park
Hana Lava Tube (or Cave) - Hana Rain Forest is a good place to hike

Here is a link to some of the other trails as well:
MAUI ISLAND HIKING TRAILS MAP

Hope this helps.

well, as much as that's wonderful and maybe do able on the big island, on maui it's kind of impossible. it's one of the most visited islands and there are people just about everywhere. last time i was there a few months ago, most of the quieter, lesser visited spots (usually due to location) that would possibly be what you are looking for were and are usually closed because of property owners, accidents or people misbehaving. i would suggest picking up Andrew Doughtys Maui Revealed book (the blue book) that you can get at any bookstore chain and looking at the hiking section. they list pretty much everything and will give you a good idea of the kind of foot traffic, level of difficulty and exactly what to expect. but, on top of this, with so many places becoming inaccessable, the book may not be updated enough for every single place. best to find the ones you are interested in then check to see if they are open/accessable on here or another site. also, even when that's the case, be prepared to show up and be disapointed. have back up plans. you can't go wrong with any hike in Haleakala National Park; usually open and stunning!

also, don't let my "everythings closed!" warning discourage you. it's still beautiful. you can still get off the beated path, it's just much harder on O'ahu and Mau'i than it should be!
