What do you think about this vehicle in the 184hp Grand Touring trim? I went today and checked it out and it looks great. Anyone own one of these? Is this able to tow 1000 lbs (motorcycle + small trailer)? Is the power good enough when climbing grades?
Mazda 3 is not rated to tow unless you want to risk losing the factory warranty.. So to answer your question no the 2014 Mazda 3 is not recommend to tow without voiding or possibly damaging the transmission or driveline on the car. Why no tow Capacity
If you really want to buy a Mazda that is capable of towing without voiding the factory warranty and still have a skyacvtive engine then you need to be looking at the CX-5 or CX-9 OP
The CX-5 is too much money for what it is...fully loaded it's over $30k and the interior has a super tiny LCD screen which is quite dated compared to the Ford Escape. The Subaru Forester has an even worse interior however it comes with the 250hp turbo.
If the CX-5 full loaded was a bit less, say $28k or so I would think it would be worth it but I think $30k is way too much for the CX-5.
My requirement to tow is only 700 lbs (450 lb bike + 250 lb trailer) so I don't need some towing beast of a vehicle, I would rather have a regular vehicle that can do some marginal towing.

You could still buy the Mazda 3 as you daily driver and find a cheap used Mid-Late 90s-Early 00's Ford Ranger/Mazda B-Series PU truck to be your second vehicle to tow/haul with ease.
Something like this in 2WD with a V6 for $2500-4K would be perfect as a second vehicle with minimum issuance coverage on it if you really want a the 2014 Mazda 3 and still have something you can use to get your Dirtbike and all your gear around and tow a trailer with ease and without any warranty issues to worry about on the Mazda 3
fully loaded Mazda 3 is $30,000, isn't the Mazda 3 in the same class as the Toyota Corolla? I thought it was quite steep a price to pay for a vehicle in this segment. For instance a fully loaded Nissan Sentra with leather, nav, BOSE etc. is only $23,000 and while it's true the Mazda 3 has a bit more gadgetry such as radar cruise and xenon lights it's not sufficient to be $7k more expensive!!

Yes, I own one with every option you can get and I do enjoy it. I came from a 2013 Gti and like it better in some ways, less in others. The motor feels underpowered despite the fact it is actually pretty quick for a compact car. Mazda also cut back on the noise dampening material which makes this car as buzzy and loud as a Hyundai Excel. Interior is nice, handles well, quick in the upper revs, looks still make me excited after owning one for a year.

The high-end Grand Touring edition of the 3 can almost compete with BMW 3-series and Mercedes CLA class vehicles.
